Triage is het door de doktersassistent beoordelen van de urgentie van de hulpvraag. Dat wil zeggen dat de doktersassistent beoordeelt met hoeveel spoed een patiënt door een arts gezien moet worden. Vervolgens bepaalt de doktersassistent wat er moet gebeuren: naar de huisarts, al dan niet met spoed, of zelf advies geven. Of, als dat zo afgesproken is, de ambulance waarschuwen en vervoer naar de spoedeisende hulp regelen.Deze tweede druk van Medische achtergronden bij triage is aangepast aan de Nederlandse Triage Standaard (NTS) en aan de NHG-TriageWijzer (voorheen NHG-TelefoonWijzer). Het boek benadert de triage vanuit de praktijk van alledag. De meeste klachten waarvoor patiënten contact opnemen met de huisartsenpraktijk, vereisen geen spoedeisende hulp. Maar áls er sprake is van een spoedgeval, moet juist dan de triage goed worden uitgevoerd. Het ABCDE-denken, het werken met toestandsbeelden in plaats van diagnoses en andere inzichten uit de traumatologie bieden daarvoor goede handvatten. Deze benaderingen zijn in dit boek opgenomen.
