Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2002 im Fachbereich Germanistik - Neuere Deutsche Literatur, Note: 1,0, Universität Hamburg (Deutsche Sprache und Literatur), Veranstaltung: "Lyrik 1850-1910", Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Hugo von Hofmannsthal hat den Kampf um den Platz im Kanon der deutschsprachigen Literatur gewonnen. Die Lektüre seiner Gedichte hat ihren Platz im Deutschunterricht erhalten, die Verlage bieten Auswahlsammlungen der Gedichte an, in zahlreichen Anthologien sind sie ebenfalls enthalten und einschlägige 'Leselisten' geben Hinweise auf seine Lyrik. Er ist zum 'Klassiker der Moderne' geworden. Andererseits ist Hofmannsthal in den siebziger Jahren mehr und mehr in den Blickpunkt sozialwissenschaftlicher Fragestellungen gerückt und schließlich als konservativer Autor 'geoutet' worden . Nicht nur wegen seiner späten Rede "Das Schrifttum als geistiger Raum der Nation" in der er die 'konservative Revolution' ausruft, sondern auch wegen des eingangs zitierten frühen Wunsches, sich eine 'Welt in die Welt' bauen zu wollen. Was soll nun gelten? Ist Hofmannsthal modern oder konservativ oder gar beides? Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit einem Gedicht Hofmannsthals, welches genau in diesem Spannungsverhältnis angesiedelt ist: "Der Kaiser von China spricht: ". 1897 geschrieben, nimmt es die Stichworte des oben zitierten Briefauszuges wieder auf: Zentrumsgefühl, Herrschaft, Abhängigkeit, Gesichtskreise und den Wunsch, sich eine 'Welt in die Welt' zu bauen. Inspiriert wurde die vorliegende Analyse durch die Beschäftigung mit der stofflich verwandten Lyrik Stefan Georges und der Lektüre von Stefan Breuers: "Ästhetischer Fundamentalismus" . Breuer versucht, außerhalb der bestehenden literaturwissenschaftlichen Kategorisierungsbemühungen ein eher soziologisch geleitetes Verständnis für die "antimodernistische" Literatur des Georgekreises zu entwickeln. Aus diesem Ansatz ergeben sich auch die Fragestellungen, die der Analyse des vorliegenden Gedichtes und damit diese
